The Compass of the Wise is a late-eighteenth-century primary source written from a rigorously theistic, Christian-hermetic worldview. Although its author was historically a Freemason, the work neither represents nor claims to represent modern Freemasonry. It belongs to an earlier intellectual and religious milieu and treats alchemy as a divinely ordered science through which creation may be studied in reverence to its Creator. Alchemy is presented as the root of natural philosophy, sacred geometry, medicine, and initiatic discipline, transmitted through the patriarchs and preserved among ancient and Christian civilizations.

The work rejects profanation, charlatanry, and moral laxity, insisting the art cannot be separated from virtue, discretion, and fear of God.
